It's that time of year for another Month of Love. This first challenge for this week is Secrets.

This book is all about the build up: unlacing the cover, opening up the layers, for a big reveal…

I also tried to make a brief animation of this book before I bound it, you can see it on my Tumblr.

This is a new type of book for me, a Jacob's ladder book. I painted each
panel with a bad luck image. This is one of my smallest yet, measuring
1.5 inches square. It's really best seeing it in motion, so here's
another video.

At the beginning of October my family returned from a two week trip to the western coast of Ireland. My father is in an American folk band, Betty & the Baby Boomers, who have been traveling to Clifden, Ireland for the past 20 years to play music in their Annual Arts Festival. We spent the first week in Clifden, going to concerts, plays, poetry readings and art talks in pubs and theaters. The second week we traveled north up the coast to Donegal.
I brought a small 4 x 6 watercolor sketchbook I took everywhere and promised myself I would fill. I made it about 50% of the way through, but I'm still happy. It's more loose sketching than I would normally do in two weeks time. So here's a selection of sketches from the trip.

In October I will be teaching a two weekend workshop for the Continuing Education department at MassArt. This intensive, suitable for students of all levels, will begin the first weekend by creating a variety of book structures. The second week will follow up with building a box for one of the books.

I taught a similar workshop in the spring and am excited to add an additional weekend for box making!
We spend a good chunk of our trip on the rock beaches, staring at the ground.

A few years ago, my friend who usually goes with us wasn't able to come. So I sent her a small box of rocks and decorated it with a chocolate box-like label.

This weekend, I came back to that idea. It's always interesting to retry an old idea again...

This was the first one I made, maybe three or four years ago (sadly I don't have a picture of the final product, just the sketch).
I liked the text from 'Sampler' so I kept that, as well as the shape of the label. But I evolved the lettering and imagery. I did quick color study on some blue paper to see if the colors I was toying with would work.

Nine hours in a car and another hour and a half on a ferry really pay off for a week of true relaxation in an incredibly beautiful place.

Since we've gone so many years (something crazy, like the last 15 years) there's nothing really new to see. It takes something really extraordinary for us pull out our cameras anymore. But this year I decided to try and do a better job sketching some of it. I don't pride myself on my landscape skills, but it was nice to have time to just noodle around in my sketchbook.
As I graduation gift I asked our family and life long friends to contribute any words of wisdom, advice, or meaningful quotes. I took all the input (40 pages worth), designed it up real pretty in InDesign, threw in a few illustrations, printed and bound it into a pocket-sized encyclopedia.

Here are the results, and if I do so humbly say so myself, it's one of my best books to date.
I made a quick (overnight) little color wheel book of all the things I love from
each season.

This has been one of my favorite years, both for my own work and that of others. The variety and quality is truly breathtaking. When I was a kid my dad used to sing us the song “Come Take a Trip in My
Airship;” a song about a pilot who takes away a young lady away from
all this in his airship. But whenever my dad sang it me as a kid he
replaced all the ‘hes’ with ‘shes.’ Suddenly there was a woman flying
through the universe having adventures and when she decided to settle
down she asked the man to marry her. I loved this strong, empowered sky
captain and wanted to capture the chorus of the song in a book. This was
my first star book (the name comes from the star shape it creates when
viewed from above while open).

Don't forget to check it out on Month of Love and see all the other incredible art that's being made!
It's my final piece, and the final day of Month of Fear!

When I was younger I spent a lot of time at my younger sister’s ballet
recitals. Though most of it was a snooze-fest for me, the best
performance was the little kids who had absolutely no coordination but
were trying their damndest. This inspired my Danse Macabre piece, which I
didn’t research much, but I’m sure obviously translates to “Dances
Adorably”. I started with a mummy but as these characters devolved it
didn’t really fit anymore, I would like to try and add it in for the
classic horror film superfecta.Alice Stannehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04434573590453188892noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9166972409456985074.post-83743329288494791292015-10-27T20:49:00.000-04:002015-10-27T20:49:33.906-04:00Month of Fear Appreciation Post

As we turn the corner from crisp chill October to downright cold November we see the end of another Month of Fear. I've loved working on this project for the past three years. It's always so inspiring to see the work of other incredible artists and it pushes me to make the best art I possibly can. It's our final week this week, with the theme Danse Macabre, so catch one last look at Month of Fear!Alice Stannehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04434573590453188892noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9166972409456985074.post-9343490007853094982015-10-23T20:43:00.000-04:002015-10-27T20:43:24.061-04:00Month of Fear - What Lies Beneath?

This week's Month of Fear challenge was What Lies Beneath? I made a box that opened with multiple panels to reveal different pieces of anatomy. There's a brain made of cork with thoughts pinned to it; a ribcage made of paper covered a heart painted on a stone; a stomach embroidered full of knots. The lid of the box is indented with a silhouette.Alice Stannehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04434573590453188892noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9166972409456985074.post-4641246019021338392015-10-18T11:13:00.001-04:002015-10-27T20:47:56.560-04:00Month of Fear - Mirrors

Month of Fear is back in excellent form! This week's challenge is Mirrors, which led me into learning about the various death beliefs of the Victorians. Text reads:

Immensely obsessed with death, the Victorians
believed that mirrors in the homes of the deceased needed to be covered
to prevent the departed soul from being trapped behind the glass, unable
to pass over.
The Victorians also believed that if a
mirror in your home fell and broke of it’s own accord, it was a portent
that someone in the home was going to die.

Cut paper on mirrors mounted in a handmade board book, measures 4.5 x 4.5 inches. Making the slipcase for the Narrow House book was a bit more complex than some of the others and took a bit paper engineering to make the shape of the case match slope of the roof. But it was well worth the effort to create this uniquely shaped case.Alice Stannehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04434573590453188892noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9166972409456985074.post-85967639738499746712015-05-13T10:00:00.000-04:002015-05-13T10:00:08.109-04:00Slipcase Week - Day 3: The Little Books of Fear

Slipcases are fantastic because they are easy to make, fun to decorate, and they help protect your books from every day wear and tear.
We were provided with matching shadowboxes and asked to make a piece related to the idea of shadows and darkness. I chose to make a three dimensional representation of an anatomical drawing depicting the "darkness in the hearts of man."
